Letter from the Secretary-General

Dear participants,

As the Secretary-General of the third annual session of Cakabey Schools Model United Nations (CAKAMUN), it is with great pleasure to welcome you to our conference. Since the establishment of our long-planned conference, CAKAMUN works harder each year to bring worldwide issues to a platform on which they can be discussed freely to raise awareness through the community. Last year, we have hosted our conference online, and due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will be proceeding online this year as well.

Annually, we have been trying to revolve the theme of our conference around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are selected by the General Assembly as part of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Sustainable Development Goals aim to provide sustainable development and work towards the betterment of our future. Nations all around the world need to cooperate on a humanitarian, economic, political, and social ground to promote sustainable growth and the achievement of the SDGs. Obstacles surrounding the SDGs must be overcome with cooperation among nations for a better future.

This year, we have chosen ‘Climate Action’, which is the thirteenth SDG, as the theme of our conference. Climate change affects everything from geopolitics to economies to migration. It shapes cities, life expectancies, and biodiversity all around the world. Its effects being perceptibly seen in the previous years, climate change poses a threat of extinction of all life forms on the Earth, if no action is taken upon. The world is not ready for the sea levels, extinction, water scarcity, diseases, and famine it will face.

The upcoming CAKAMUN conference consists of 8 committees, 2 of which are special committees, with agendas that all touch upon the ‘Climate Action’ goal in different aspects. Each committee’s purpose is to resolve its designated agenda encompassing specific issues that pose obstacles to this goal.

On behalf of our Executive Team, I am beyond thrilled to invite you all to CAKAMUN 2022.

With four years of experience including our first conference CAKATRAIN and the last two conferences we have hosted, CAKAMUN aims to be one of the most prestigious conferences that are available to the global Model United Nations community. The strenuous efforts of both our Executive and Organizational Team assure that this year you will have another opportunity to add to your unforgettable MUN experiences. I wish you all fruitful debates, cooperation towards development, and fun during this year’s session.

Yours sincerely, Nergis INAL Secretary-General of CAKAMUN'22

Letter from the Deputy Secretary General

Dear Delegates and Faculty Advisors,

It is our greatest pleasure and honor to invite you to join us at CAKAMUN'22, which will be held online between 18-20 March 2022. Ever since our first conference, we have been committed to providing you CAKAMUN in a more entertaining manner than its predecessors. CAKAMUN wants to be more than just another MUN conference, providing you with an experience that forges new friendships that transcend all boundaries, which you will truly never forget.

Having seen the dire situation of the world becoming worse with each passing day, we have selected this year's topic as "Climate Action", emphasizing how crucial it is for the necessary actions to be taken with haste and caution. The global average temperatures have been steadily increasing every year and 2019 was among the years with the highest recorded annual temperatures.

According to UN data, the increase in global average temperatures since the beginning of the 20th century is around the 1.7 C mark, considering that climate scientists predict that the change in temperatures rising above 2 C would have catastrophic global effects, we can say that the clock is ever-ticking. Not only in data and scientific contexts, but as well as in our daily lives, the changes caused by climate change have gradually become more apparent, necessitating the unavoidable need for adaptation.

Our committees this year have formed around the idea of discussing the processes and outcomes of our changing lives at every aspect and the importance of conversing about the change in our shifting reality.

Our 8 committees this year will be comprised of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Office of Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Office of Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), European Council (EC) and Security Council (SC).

We would like to assure you that CAKAMUN will continue to deliver a high-quality, committed, and life-changing forum for its attendees, as we have always strived for CAKAMUN to be.

Best regards, Canberk SOYTEKİN Deputy Secretary-General of CAKAMUN'22
